The beauty of starting a business, is that you can create a business that accommodates your life …. not the other way around. What happens is we start our business without regard to that. We start businesses wanting wealth and growth and cast away why we started it in the first place.
I’m here to help you re-frame your thoughts.
Imagine driving in a car on a highway. It’s a nice day, the breeze is gently and warm. The sky is clear and blue and traffic is perfect. Driving conditions are perfect and you’re not so worried about the direction you are going in. Instead you are enjoying the ride.
Then you hit a pot hole that makes your teeth clink together. The weather becomes windy and cold. You roll up your window just in time to block the curtain of heavy rain and slight that's hammering your car. As a result traffic comes to a stand still.
Let me guess. You're more interested in your destination aren't you.
The problem is, you don't have one. You never wrote down the address, the neighborhood, nothing. You have no idea where you are going and who will be there. You're not even sure what much it costs to stay.
A life design is your written picture of your destination. In your life design you identify how much money you want to make, where you want to live, who'll be in your life and so on. It allows you to get detailed about your dream life. Your life design is your destination and a part of your why.
See, everybody wants gentle breezes and sunny days until that storm comes. Just like in business, you'll have days that are amazing. Clients are paying on time, you website didn't crash, you have several very productive and energizing meetings with people you want to interact with. On good days, you aren't necessarily thinking about your why. You don't really have you destination in mind, because everything is smooth and peaceful. You're enjoying the journey. All of that changes when you have a bad day. A day when your payment gateway malfunctions or you loose a client. A day when your business bank loan is held up and you needed the money yesterday. A day when a project is delayed and screws up your whole schedule for the week. That's when you destination, or life design kicks in. That's when you have to dig deep and remember why you are hustling in the first place.
Don't get me wrong, service to others is a huge reason you started your business in the first place. Service to others does always cut it, does it. Sometimes you need to look within and find a motivator that is a little bit self serving. There's nothing wrong with that. It's human and natural. EVERYONE! on this planet has a "What's in it for me?" mentality at some point.
Your life design is your motivator. When service to others fails to motivate you, you have your dreams of comfort, privilege, travel and more to keep you pushing forward. The key is to write it down. Detail it so that you can read it over. Detail it so you can manifest it and bring it to pass. Without a destination, you are lost.
Start today by 1) detailing your life design and 2) finding small ways to start shifting how you operate on a day to day basis that that is it leads to you living that life. For instance, if you want to work only 4 days a week, don't choose a business that requires you to work 6 days. Redesign your business model so it can accommodate your only working 4 days instead of 5 or 6.
